Ever wonder what it takes to be a great DI lacrosse player? Inside…

Ever wonder what it takes to be a great DI lacrosse player? Inside Lacrosse has a great Q & A UNC’s Corey Donohue as she offers some insight as to what life is like going to scholl at UNC and playing on the Women’s Lacrosse team.

North Carolina senior attacker Corey Donohoe is looking to lead the Tar Heels back to championship weekend. As the season gets underway, she took some time to talk to IL about everything from the 2011 season to how she got the nickname “corndog.”

When did you first start playing lacrosse?

I started when I was four. My mom started my recreational lacrosse program when my sister started playing when she was six, so I started a little bit earlier than most people. I’m from Maryland so it’s normal to start when you’re younger. Me and my sister played on the same team together all the way through our rec league.

Were there a lot of people in that league, you guys being so young?

For each team there were probably about 15 people. League started being 75-100 people and when I played in that same program (my mom ran the rec program) and it was huge by then because the sport had grown so much.

Who was really influential early on in your lacrosse career?

It was my mom. She’s the one who definitely got me into playing. She played three sports in college and my dad played basketball in college so they were really pushing us (I have three other siblings) to really stay connected with sports and play as many sports as we could when we were little, so we played a different sport every season. Soccer, basketball, lacrosse, my brothers played baseball sometimes. We tried field hockey too. They really wanted to expose us to a lot of different sports and see what we like and they were definitely a big influence on getting us involved in lacrosse.

To continue reading this interview click HERE

Wilson HS and Rhino Select standout Fiona Dearth has recently committed to take her skills to Amherst College (NCAA DIII). We had a chance to talk with her about how Rhino helped prepare her to play at the next level.

How long have you been involved with Rhino?

I have been involved since my freshman year (2007) when I participated in fall ball trainings/leagues.

What tournaments have you traveled to as part of Rhino Select?

Sandstorm Tournament in Palm Springs 2009 and 2011.

Please share one experience in competing in one of out of state tournaments as a Rhino

Select player?

I had a great time traveling to Palm Springs this winter. You get to play against great competition with awesome teammates, and, best of all, it’s gorgeous and sunny!

How did it benefit you to travel to these tournaments with Rhino Select?

Oftentimes it’s hard to find tournaments and high-level competition during the off-season in Oregon so traveling with Rhino provided an opportunity to play against good competition and be seen by lots of college coaches.

Why did you decide to play on a Rhino Select Team as opposed to attending one of the

numerous recruiting camp options that are out there?

I did attend some recruiting camps during the summer, but Rhino gave me a chance to play with girls from my high school team and around Oregon which is lots of fun. Rhino coaches are great too, and you get more individual coaching attention than you might at a huge camp.

Can you speak into your Rhino Select Team coaching experience?

Katie Sheridan and Katie Tarlow are great coaches and in the two years I played for them I learned a lot! They both have experience playing at a high level and they bring lots of energy and enthusiasm to every practice and game.

What advice would you give a young Oregon lacrosse player that is thinking about trying out for Rhino Select?

Rhino is a great way to get to know other players from Oregon and to improve your game tremendously. It’s an opportunity to receive excellent coaching and play alongside some of the best girls in the state. If you are looking to play in college, traveling to tournaments with Rhino is a good way to be seen by coaches and really strengthen your game by playing against great competition from other regions.

Congrats on your commitment to attend and play at Amherst this fall! We look forward to following your career! What is the single most lesson message you learned while playing with Rhino Lacrosse that will help you be successful at Amherst College?

Rhino really emphasizes working hard during every practice and game. I also learned that working to develop specific skills and good technique goes a long way to improving your game overall. A strong work ethic and attention to detail are some things I will definitely take with me next year.

When was the turning point that it became apparent that lacrosse could provide you unforeseen opportunities?

I think I realized my sophomore year that I wanted to continue playing lacrosse after high school. Once I started talking to coaches in earnest my junior year I began to realize that lacrosse could help me get into a great school that offered tremendous academic, as well as athletic, opportunities.
