Rhino Girls Academy Returns June 19!

Everyone’s favorite week of lacrosse is back! The Rhino Lacrosse Girls Academy is set to return to Mary S Young Park June 19-22. New for this year the 2012 Goalie Clinic will kick off the Academy on Monday giving goalies four more days to polish their skills and build upon the foundation set at the Goalie Clinic. This is an exciting academy that will leave all attendees feeling more confident and knowledgeable in their abilities all while having fun in Rhino’s trademark style.

Rhino Teams Ready To Charge South

With the Sandstorm Tournament a little over a week away all four Rhino teams (Boys: Rippers & Orange Girls: Rose & Rosebuds) are working hard in their few remaining practices to ensure they bring their best game to the event. Inside Lacrosse has done yet another story on the huge growth and building excitement for this years tournament.

Annapolis, MD — Those famous Santa Ana winds must have pushed further inward than normal because the Sand Storm Lacrosse Festival is absolutely blowing up!

The fifth edition of the increasingly popular winter tournament has reached full capacity, having attracted a whopping 85 teams on the girls’ side and another 50 teams on the boys’ side. The tremendous response forced organizers with Synapse Sports and Lax West to close registration more than a month out – a first for the event held at the Empire Polo Club in beautiful Palm Springs.

“Our goal from the beginning was to make Sand Storm the premier winter tournament on the West Coast. This year’s remarkable growth confirms that Sand Storm has become a can’t-miss event,” said Cathy Samaras, founder and CEO of Synapse Sports. “It’s further proof that a great warm weather location, state-of-the-art venue, top-notch competition and detailed organization are what the players are looking for.”

LM’s Player of the Year: Shannon Smith

Lacrosse Magazine has named Shannon Smith as their pick for the 2011 Women’s player of the year. Smith as a junior stepped up and had the highest-scoring single season (86 goals) in Northwestern history. She led the nation in both goals and goals per game (5.57). She won the Tewaaraton Award, the IWLCA Division I Attacker of the Year award, an NCAA championship and the Suzy Favor Award, which goes to the top Big 10 female athlete in all sports.

ESPNU To Air Women’s NCAA DIV 1 Finals

As part of a new $500 million multimedia agreement announced Thursday between ESPN and the NCAA that lasts through 2023-24, the Division I women’s lacrosse championship will now be broadcast on ESPNU.

The network added NCAA championship coverage in seven sports — Division I women’s lacrosse, women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s fencing, Division I men’s and women’s outdoor track, and women’s bowling — to give the network coverage of 24 NCAA championships.

ESPN has already broadcast the Division I men’s lacrosse championship for 17 consecutive years and shown 28 men’s lacrosse championships since 1980, and has expanded coverage on ESPNU in recent years.

NCAA Div 1 Preseason Rankings

For the first time ever, the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook includes a women’s section. The inaugural Face-Off Yearbook Division I women’s preview includes IL’s preseason top 20, preseason All-Americans, 10 intriguing questions for 2012, conference outlooks and more. Northwestern tops the preseason rankings. Having lost very little from last year’s championship team, the Wildcats bring back a veteran squad that also boats a lot of depth and youthful talent.
